Remember, Remember the 5th of November (A Call to action from Occupy Fast Food)

Posted on October 23, 2012

This past September, Workers at the Hot n Crusty coffee shop on 63rd St and 2nd Ave. In New York successfully struck for better wages and working conditions. Two weeks ago, 88 Walmart workers around America went on strike in response to the conglomerate’s history of retaliation against anyone that expresses a desire to organize; which not too long ago would have been unimaginable. Last week, tens of thousands of Greek workers again shut down the transportation system in Athens as part of General Strike against EU austerity.

In the last 18 months there have been strikes around the world: Nigeria,Spain, Britain, and Columbia as well as America, Israel, China and others. Every day more of the working class wakes up to the reality of the tyrannical nature of late capitalism and the need to stand with other workers. (see class warfare)

Being that the so-called “Middle Class” (if there ever was one) is rapidly shrinking due to the greed of the bankers and the CEO’s as well as the politicians they hold in their pockets; the time has come to stop putting our hopes in elections and take action.

The choice between two millionaire, pro-war, pro-“business” plutocrats isn’t democracy. Therefore, voting is useless and in fact; only adds legitimacy to the oligarchy we call the United States Government. Thus, direct action tactics such as boycotts and labor strikes are the only real means woking class people have for fighting back against the agenda of the new age robber barrons that we now call “The 1%”.

As Noam Chomsky put it:
“”Personally I’m in favor of democracy, which means that the central institutions in the society have to be under popular control. Now, under capitalism we can’t have democracy by definition. Capitalism is a system in which the central institutions of society are in principle under autocratic control. Thus, a corporation or an industry is, if we were to think of it in political terms, fascist; that is, it has tight control at the top and strict obedience has to be established at every level — there’s a little bargaining, a little give and take, but the line of authority is perfectly straightforward. Just as I’m opposed to political fascism, I’m opposed to economic fascism. I think that until major institutions of society are under the popular control of participants and communities, it’s pointless to talk about democracy.”

The 5th of November has, in recent years come to be associated with resistance to tyranny. It is also the day before the US Presidential (S)Election between two candidates that support fascistic neo-liberal policies that keep Fast Food workers in working poverty. It is with these facts in mind that Occupy Fast Food is calling on ALL FAST FOOD WORKERS from Oakland to New York; Miami to Seattle; London to Osaka to GO ON STRIKE THIS 5th OF NOVEMBER.

This 5th of November let’s show the bosses THE VERY REAL POWER behind slogans like “We are the 99%” and “An injury to One is an injury to All”!

Fellow Fast Food Workers, This November 5th, sit down/walkout/occupy your workplace. DEMAND a raise! DEMAND a union! DEMAND respect!
